Poesi - Lewis Carroll

Lewis Carroll, som egentligen hette Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, är mest känd för böckerna om Alice i underlandet, men var utöver författare även matematiker, logiker, fotograf och utbildad till (dock ej vigd till) präst i anglikanska kyrkan. På grund av sitt intresse för de unga döttrarna till vännen Liddell, samt det faktum att han tog en del fotografier av nakna flickebarn, har Dodgson av vår samtid betraktats som pedofil. Detta tycks vara en orättvis tolkning baserad på ett missförstånd av den viktorianska erans syn på nakna barn. Nakna barn var en symbol för oskuldsfullhet, och studier av dylika motiv var standard för den tidens fotografer, Dodgson var inget undantag.

Carrolls stil låter sig bäst beskrivas med ett exempel, den mycket populära nonsensdikten Jabberwocky, publicerad 1871 som ett avsnitt i boken Through the Looking-Glass, den andra boken om Alices äventyr.


Jabberwocky

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.
